Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the NZIP
Held on Friday, 2 August 2002 at 4:00pm
in Room ScB3.31, Massey University, Palmerston North

Present: David Parry (President), Trevor Castle (Vice-President), Tony Signal (Secretary), Bob O'Driscoll (Treasurer), Geoff Barnes, Winton Clitheroe, Rod Lambert, Jenny McKelvie

  1. Minutes of the 2001 Annual General Meeting.

    The minutes of the 2001 AGM were confirmed as a true and accurate record.

  2. Matters arising from the minutes.

    The Royal Society has not decided whether to act as a permanent address for the Institute.

  3. President's Report

    The President's report was presented.

    That the President's report be accepted.

  4. Treasurer's Report.
    1. The financial statements and Auditor's report were presented.

      That the Treasurer's report be accepted.

    2. Winton Clitheroe reported on the financial position of the Education Section. An Income and Expenditure statement from the Royal Society were provided, showing an operating surplus for the last year of $5340.17, as well as account balances.

      That the Education Section financial statement be accepted.

      CARRIED

    It was noted that in the future the Royal Society will be handling all the accounts and financial matters of the Education Section.

  5. Reports from Branches

    Reports from the Wellington and Otago branches were read.

  6. Education Section Report.

    No report was received, however the Chairperson (David Housden) did make a report to the last Council meeting.

  7. Election of Officers

    The following nominations have been received for Officers of NZIP:

    President Prof. David Parry
    Vice-President Mr. Trevor Castle
    Treasurer Assoc. Prof. Bob O'Driscoll
    Secretary Prof. Tony Signal

    There being no other nominations, these persons were declared elected.

  8. Election of the Committee of the Education Section

    The following nominations have been received for the Committee:

    Chairperson Mr David Housden (St. Bernard's College)
    Treasurer Mr Winton Clitheroe (Hutt Valley High School)
    Secretary Mr Raymond Neal (St. Patrick's College, Kilbirnie)
    Members Ms Ann Forsyth (Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt)
    Brenda MacKechnie (Hutt Valley High School)
    Mr John Whakamoe (Wellington High School)
    Dr Peter Gilberd, (RSNZ)

    There being no other nominations, these persons were declared elected.

  9. Resolution to set membership fees for the 2002/2003 year.

    "Council recommends that fees for all classes of membership be left unchanged."

  10. Resolutions to start an accredidation scheme for tertiary physics courses.

    Motion 1:

    “That the New Zealand Institute of Physics (NZIP) work with the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) to implement a scheme of accreditation for those universities teaching physics or physics-based majors in New Zealand and that this scheme be based on that introduced recently in Australia by the AIP.”

    Motion 2:

    “That the NZIP consider implementing a scheme of registration for New Zealand physicists practicing in this country.”

    Council recommended that the NZIP not proceed at this time, but to monitor how the Australian scheme progresses, and to return to the matter at a later stage.

    That the two motions lie on the table.

  11. Resolution to become a Companion Society of the Institute of Physics (IoP).

    “That the NZIP become a Companion Society of the Institute of Physics.”

  12. General Business

    Geoff Barnes raised the issue of the need to promote Physics based careers to high school students. It was noted that council has also discussed this and is to investigate making a video presentation for schools.
